In the mid-1940s, eight-year-old Amos (Amir Tessler) is living with his father Arieh (Gilad Kahana) and mother Fania (Natalie Portman), refugees who have fled to Palestine for safety.
Fania, the once-privileged daughter of a Jewish European family, is struggling to accept poverty and Arieh is a failed academic. To escape their circumstances, Fania tells Amos that they should make up a story, and begins a bonding ritual that ignites their imagination. Their life, challenges and the changing times are seen through the eyes of young Amos who eventually follows his own ideals and political beliefs.
