It's not only Vermeer in black and white and one of the more interesting character studies in years, but it's also a fascinating examination of post-war Europe. Can't say enough good things about it, except that I'm about to drive into Toronto to see it again.

Pawel Pawlikowski created little gem of a movie. The whole story is based on many a like stories which happened in Poland during German occupation followed by Soviet occupation of this country. In beautiful poetic way he showed how terribly damaged Poles (both Jewish and Catolic ) were and in the way still are.

In black and white - amazingly filmed - not a comedy.

An excellent film! Stark black and white photography. Framed extremely well. lean script, and a thought provoking fascinating treatment of an intriguing situation. I would highly recommend this film to movie lovers. Little action, little dialogue. The story is told in a pure cinematic way.

My son and came very close to falling asleep during this film. There was no connection between the audience and the main character Ida. The synopsis of the film supposedly has to do with Ida discovering a dark family secret. That premise took up less than a third of the film. The majority of the film has to do with the relationship between Ida and her aunt. Instead of this film go home and watch paint dry. Literally.
