Beautiful movie… at a time where some people still want to ignore how other people feel and want to be for fulfilling themselves, even more important than ever. Let’s just let them be how they want (or need) to be, no harm done. Just cope with it, Billy is a great example of how to defy all odds and fulfill your dreams. Forget about the stereotypes, just be yourself!

Great movie, more than ever important, where a kid is determined enough to follow his dreams despite violating the expectations of the society and common gender stereotyping at the time.

Are you kidding me? 20+ years later, this remains one of the most memorable coming-of-age movies. A sensitive kid growing up in a rough mid-1980’s mining community that is getting crushed by Maggie Thatcher’s politics, defying all expectations what a boy is supposed to be like, feeling drawn to ballet and following his dream determined (but equally scared) - what more "conflict" can you ask for? A perfect reflection of the time, with the tough but constructive relationship between Billy and his teacher Mrs. Wilkinson, along with the evolution of his father and brother, a great story overall, combined with great acting!

Appealing performances can't hide the fact that this is a very dull story with almost no conflict to speak of. Between this film, THE QUEEN, and THE KING'S SPEECH one may be forgiven for thinking that Britain is a land where nothing actually dramatic ever happens. Apparently modern British filmmakers are unaware how essential conflict is to storytelling.
