Fern (Frances McDormand) is a hard-working widow in her early 60s, who is left jobless when a U.S. Gypsum plant is shut down and the rural town becomes a ghost town. Fern still needs to find work, so she packs up her RV and moves to anther town, taking seasonal jobs wherever she can find them, such as working on the packing line in an Amazon fulfillment center.
Fern puts a few miles on her RV as she passes through a number of Western states. She meets other nomads and listens to their hearbreaking stories. While some people want to live life on their own terms and reject conventional society, others were forced to adapt after losing a job or a partner.
Based on the book by Jessica Bruder.
