Sam (Julia Sarah Stone), an awkward 14-year-old girl, is forced by her mother to work in a seniors’ residence where she cleans rooms and deals with the grumpier residents. Meanwhile, she deals with bullying from her swimming peers over her physical underdevelopment.
As a way of coping she begins to bond with some of the senior residents, namely Judith (Diana Leblanc) and Ed (Kenneth Welsh). Through her conversations with them, Sam is able to find a deeper connection with the adults in her life than the children she goes to school with and discovers how deeply complex the world really is.
