When a parishioner talks to Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) during confession about the sexual abuse he suffered as child at the hands of the priest, he tells him he will kill James the next Sunday. Since his abuser is dead, the man reasons that killing a good priest would hurt the Catholic Church more than killing a bad one.
