After divorcing her con man husband Hal (Alec Baldwin), Manhattan socialite Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) is left completely depressed and penniless. She attempts to try and get her life back together, but finds herself falling into the traps of alcohol and anti-depressants.
Completely desperate and unable to afford the extravagance of her former life, Jasmine moves into a spare bedroom in San Francisco to live with her blue-collar sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Although they'd become estranged, the two sisters reconnect over a similar enemy in Hal, to whom Ginger's ex-husband Augie (Andrew Dice Clay) lost all their money.
