Italy, 1948. One year after his father left to find work in the Belgian mines, young Rocco Granata and his family go to join him. Upon arrival, they’re disappointed by the bleak climate, the badly located house and the latent hatred that the locals seem to have for foreigners. Seeking a way to thrive, Rocco discovers love and music. He still faces serious challenges: the racist attitude of his beloved Helena’s father, the stubborn prejudices of his own father to the artistic community, the precarious economic situation of his family and discriminatory laws of the Belgian authorities against the immigrants. However, with Helena’s encouragement, Rocco composes "Marina," a catchy song that achieves worldwide success.
