Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciarán Hinds) are going through the motions of being a longtime married couple. He reads the newspaper at the table when they eat, and stays at home to drink alone while Stella goes out to church.
When Stella surprises Gerry with a trip to Amsterdam, she manages to get him out of the hotel room to visit some tourist spots, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House. When she brings him to visit the Begijnhof, a group of historic houses dating back to the Middle Ages where a community of single women devoted themselves to God, Stella has a secret as to why she researched this place and what she wants there.
Based on Bernard MacLaverty's 2017 novel.
